05-06-2026: Moderni; The LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) South is a  eight-gate expansion project at Los Angeles International Airport designed to enhance passenger experience with a focus on sustainability and modern design. Located south of the existing West Gates, this project utilizes innovative Offsite Construction and Relocation (OCR) techniques where nine segments were constructed elsewhere on the airfield and then transported to the site, reducing impact on airport operations.

PROJECT IDEAS

The LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) South project is a $400 million, 150,000-square-foot expansion featuring eight new narrowbody gates, set for completion in late 2025. It utilizes innovative offsite construction (OCR) to create a sustainable, LEED Silver-targeted facility designed by Woods Bagot, featuring California-modernist aesthetics, natural light, and a brise soleil system to reduce heat and glare.

  • Offsite Construction and Relocation (OCR): Building segments off-site near the airport and transporting them into place, reducing construction time, saving money, and allowing for a larger local workforce, including contractors usually unable to work on active airfields.
  • Sustainability and Comfort: The exterior includes a “brise soleil” system (solar shading) to manage heat gain and solar glare while providing passengers with scenic, unobstructed outdoor views.
  • Passenger-Centric Layout: The concourse functions as a “living room” in the terminal, focusing on a “human-centered approach” to travel, prioritizing comfort, relaxation, and intuitive movement over dense gate seating.
  • Operational Integration: The L-shaped facility, designed by Woods Bagot and built by W.E. O’Neil, functions as an extension of the West Gates at Tom Bradley International Terminal, optimizing passenger flow from the existing pedestrian tunnel.
