10-10-2026: Moderni; The Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada, stands as a masterpiece of contemporary architecture designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki. Opened in 2014 in collaboration with Moriyama Teshima Architects, it is the first museum in North America dedicated exclusively to the arts and civilizations of the Islamic world. Maki famously structured the entire facility around the concept of “light,” treating it not just as an environmental factor but as an active building material that connects diverse cultures and historic eras.

PROJECT IDEAS

The modern design concept for the Aga Kahn Museum centers around light as a spatial inspiration for enlightenment, knowledge, and pluralistic unity.

  • Light as a Catalyst: Guided by a personal brief from His Highness the Aga Khan, Maki designed the building to capture, filter, and reflect natural sunlight so that it animates the structure differently throughout the day and across seasons.
  • Minimalist & Angular Geometry: The exterior features a crisp, compact white volume (81 by 54 meters) clad in sandblasted white Brazilian granite with sharp, tapering angles and deep window recesses.
  • Islamic Architectural Reinterpretation: Modernist minimalism blends with traditional geometric concepts. A double-height, glass-enclosed central courtyard reinterprets the traditional mashrabiya (or jali screen), casting intricate, shifting geometric shadow patterns across the interior.
  • Solar Orientation: The building is oriented 45 degrees to solar north, optimizing how sunlight strikes the angular granite facets and the central water features.
  • Spatial Organization: The compact footprint houses two main exhibition galleries, educational classrooms, a conservation/storage area, and a 350-seat Nanji Family Foundation Auditorium (featuring a teak-lined ceiling and a striking hexagonal lapis-blue spiral staircase).
  • Site and Landscape Integration: Located on a 17-acre site shared with the Charles Correa-designed Ismaili Centre, the museum faces a formal Persian- and Mughal-inspired charbagh (four-part) garden designed by Vladimir Djurovic, complete with minimalist black reflecting pools.
